Pregnancy – Pelvic Girdle Pain

Pelvic girdle pain is pain in and around the pelvis which most often occurs during or after pregnancy. This pain often results in difficulty getting up from sitting, standing on one leg, walking or turning in bed.

How can Physio help?

Balanced strength and mobility is vital for postural support and for the lower back and pelvis to perform the tasks mentioned above. You Physiotherapist will assess your posture, strength and mobility to determine any factors that may be contributing to your pain and give you a management plan towards recovery.

Postnatal Assessment

Our postnatal assessment is a 1-hour session with a Women’s Health Physiotherapist, designed to support your recovery after childbirth. It’s a great idea to schedule this session after your 6-week check-up with your doctor, or whenever you feel ready to start working on your recovery.

Pregnancy and childbirth can bring significant changes to your body, and it’s normal to face challenges during the postnatal period, both physically and emotionally. While many women find that their body has made a lot of progress by the 6-week mark, issues such as incontinence, pain, or pelvic floor dysfunction can still persist. Our physiotherapists can help address these concerns and guide you through exercises and recovery strategies to safely return to the activities you love, whether that’s daily tasks, walking, strength training, or running.

What to Expect

Your Physiotherapist will begin by discussing your pregnancy, delivery, and recovery journey. We will listen to any symptoms or concerns you may have and take time to understand your unique experience.

We’ll then assess your posture and movement patterns to see if there are any areas needing attention. Part of this assessment includes checking for Diastasis Recti, a common condition where the abdominal muscles separate during pregnancy, as well as assessing the healing of any C-section scars if applicable. We may also perform a pelvic floor evaluation to ensure that your muscles are functioning optimally—helping with recovery and preventing issues like incontinence.

After the assessment, we’ll discuss a personalized treatment plan that focuses on your healing and fitness goals. This is a collaborative process, and together we will set realistic, achievable steps to help you regain strength and confidence as you move forward in your recovery journey.

Remember, recovery is different for everyone, and we are here to support you every step of the way. Whether you’re ready right after your check-up or need more time, we are happy to help whenever you’re ready to begin.
